Solution
Global was contracted by O'Neal Construction to provide groundwater treatment services for the Broadway Park West project in Ann Arbor, MI. This project involved excavating below the water table to install various utilities and foundations, which required groundwater dewatering and discharge. The site's groundwater was impacted by low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) due to contamination from a former manufactured gas plant located on the property.
Contaminated groundwater generated during several site dewatering activities needed to be treated to the standards set by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) before being released into the Huron River. Global Environmental provided a comprehensive groundwater treatment system to handle the dewatering and discharge process. The solution included:
- Two frac tanks for storing raw, untreated water
- A transfer pump with automated pump-out capabilities
- A BF-2 bag filter skid for pre-treatment, providing 100-micron filtration
- MWT02K2 treatment trailer equipped with 25-micron bag filters and lead/lag carbon vessels
- TS8X30CPR reactivated granular activated carbon (GAC) for removing contaminants
Global Environmental also provided training to O'Neal Construction's staff on the daily operation of the treatment system. Furthermore, an EGLE industrial/commercial B-3b operator was assigned to oversee system operations and ensure compliance. The team works closely with O'Neal to compile all required NPDES documentation for monthly submittals. The treatment system ensures that groundwater is effectively treated to meet or exceed NPDES permit criteria, safeguarding the Huron River while facilitating the timely completion of the construction project.
